Paper Memorabilia

1821 French armillary sphere
BEFORE: Wood, cardboard, paper and metal sphere on a wooden stand. Varnished. Surface dirt overall. All connecting joints were weakened and cracked, causing loss of shape. Split cardboard layers, paper loss, and flaking throughout.

AFTER: Varnish was removed. Joints were repaired and strengthened, and paper losses were filled using Japanese paper and wheat starch paste. Cardboard layers and flaking paper were consolidated using wheat starch paste. Design losses were inpainted using a water-soluable media. Sphere was coated with size before final layer of varnish was applied.

Full-Service Laboratory

We are specially equipped to handle large format items. A loading dock is available to accomodate trucks transporting oversized or bulky objects and our lab is accessible by a large, attended freight elevator. Our facilities are protected by a 24-hour central security system, and our full-service, state-of-the-art lab can handle all aspects of paper conservation.

We have a large collection of antique laid and woven papers for use in repairs. This collection has been assembled over many years, and is large enough to closely match virtually any paper in color, weight and texture.

The Process

Objects that are presented for conservation are examined and a written treatment proposal is prepared for the owner. Treatment does not begin until the proposal has been approved by the owner. Once any questions or concerns about the treatment have been discussed, the treatment will begin as soon as possible following the receipt of the owner's signed approval. Items are always photographed before treatment. Occasionally during and after treatment slides are also taken, depending on the complexity of the project. Following AIC guidelines, written and photographic documentation of treatments remain on file at Graphic Conservation for future reference by conservators.
